Nightmare Delta flight sees plane diverted twice

The harrowing adventure began Monday with a flight from the Dominican Republic, initially scheduled to arrive at JFK International Airport at 6:15 p.m. the same day. Delta Flight number 944 left Punta Cana at 3:15 p.m.

However, this time it wasn’t unruly flight attendants that caused the flight to divert; it was some nasty weather.

Due to inclement weather, the flight was first diverted to Manchester, New Hampshire. However, the delay took a lot longer than usual because Manchester Airport doesn’t typically accept international flights. That required customs officials to trek all the way from Portland, Maine to process the flight. Passengers were given vouchers to stay overnight in hotels after having to wait two hours on the plane..

The flight took off from Manchester on Tuesday, but it was again prevented from reaching New York City by 40-knot wind gusts and low visibility. It landed Tuesday afternoon at Boston’s Logan International Airport. At that point, some customers booked new flights or rented a car to make their way home. Some passengers reported feeling ill and needing oxygen.

Finally, the plane was cleared to fly from Boston and reached New York City on Tuesday night. Delta apparently did not offer compensation, WHDH reports, as the diversions were weather-related.
