This moment is quite special since according to this article, his 17-year-old grandson, Christian Guthenberg, has graduated on the same year as his retirement; moreover, that article also indicated that his proudest moments in the teaching profession are when his former students return to visit him and share their success stories with him. That sounds very gratifying and fulfilling.
The administration of Saint Francis Prep believe that this marks the first time in the high school’s 150 year history that an educator retired on the same year as a grandchild’s graduation.
Guthenberg has instructed such math courses as probability and statistics, honors calculus, algebra, geometry and trigonometry. He noted that his grandson enjoys sports, especially soccer.
In addition, Guthenberg also serves as a radio personality on the LIU Post public radio, WCWP, where he interviews classic musicians from the ’60s, as well as rising singer-songwriters. He has been doing that for over five decades.
Saint Francis Prep, which is situated in Fresh Meadows, Queens, has been described by Digital Journal as an “excellent private high school.”
