Three U.S. swing states support legalizing marijuana, poll finds

The poll, from the polling division of Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, was conducted between March 17 and 28 and pollers spoke with between 1,000 and 1,100 respondents in each of those three states; they conducted personal interviews and interviews by land lines and cellphones.

On the question of marijuana legalization, respondents were asked their view on permitting adults “to legally possess small amounts of marijuana for personal use.” In Florida the numbers were 55 percent for and 42 against, in Ohio they were 52-44 and in Pennsylvania they were 51-45.

At this time, marijuana is legal for recreational use in Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Washington State and the District of Columbia (where commercial sales are currently prohibited). Twenty-three states and DC have legalized medical marijuana and this recent poll of swing states reflects the greater support that medical marijuana has.

The poll found support for medical marijuana to be 84 percent for and 14 percent against in Florida, 84-15 in Ohio and 88-10 in Pennsylvania. A press release on the results from Quinnipiac notes that the “Swing State Poll focuses on Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania because since 1960 no candidate has won the presidential race without taking at least two of these three states” and they are considered bellwether states.

For each poll there is a margin of error of +/- 3 percent.
