Monk goes nine days without food, water or sleep

Kogen Kamahori, 41, completed the endurance test, which has made him a living form of Buddha. This is according to the beliefs of his temple. Kamahori is the 13th monk to complete the test since the end of the second World War.

When the monk,who is the chief monk at a temple in Otsu completed his training at Mount Hiei, he was greeted by hundreds of onlookers, as well as the media.

The endurance test is considered to be the toughest part of a training regime that includes 1,000 non-consecutive days of walking around the mountain. The aim of this is to achieve enlightenment.

Kamahori will now complete the 1,000 day walk and he only has two more years left to complete his task.

He started back in 2011 and before starting to fast, he had already completed 700 days of walking. He is expected to finish the walk in later 2017.
