War on Women: Modern office air temperatures

A new study conducted by the science journal Nature Climate Change has revealed the formula utilized to determine at which temperature an air conditioner should be set for optimized comfort was based on the metabolic rate of a 154 pound male.
An individual’s metabolic rate is a measure of how much energy a person gives off at rest, and varies wildly between men, women and individuals of varying body types.
The formula designed to achieve optimized air conditioning comfort in the modern office is over 50 years old, researchers note. An average women’s metabolic rate tends to be slower than a man’s, meaning she gives off less heat and tends to be colder, on average.
Typically, women prefer air temperatures to be around 77 degrees, while men prefer temperatures closer to 71 degrees, according to the study.
Wardrobe choice also plays a factor. Men are likelier to wear shirts, jackets and more layered outfits, while modern professional women might wear skirts or blouses with shorter sleeves.
Part of this study involved observing the metabolic rates, carbon dioxide emissions and skin temperature of 16 women performing light office work in a climate controlled environment.
Researchers concluded by encouraging revised building temperature formulas for office managers that considered the overall makeup and body type of employees in the office.
