Op-Ed: 5 natural weight loss techniques to try for Spring 2015

Although there are always several new fad diets and so-called miracle weight loss cures available, it is important to carefully consider your overall health goals. After all, people who drop a lot of weight really quickly because they go on a temporary liquid diet are not going to retain their new figure after they reincorporate real food into their daily routine.

Additionally, trying out a new exercise routine without the approval of your physician could actually cause you more harm than good. With this in mind, it is no wonder that people are increasingly turning to natural methods to help them suppress their appetite and lose weight.

1. No More Midnight Snacks – According to the Salk Institute, the timing of when you eat can be just as important as what you decide to consume. In fact, a recently published study indicates that restricting yourself to a 12-hour time frame every day could be the best way to maintain or even lose weight.

The researchers discovered that test subjects that ate whatever they wanted within a 12-hour window were skinnier than those that had a similar diet but ate throughout their waking hours during the entire day. Therefore, if you want to lose weight this spring, be sure to do all of your eating within a preselected 12-hour time frame.

2. Eat Healthy, Filling Snacks – Another viable way to trim your figure before the summer is to utilize healthy snacking that will make you feel more satiated. The April 13, 2015, issue of First for Women Magazine pointed out that plant-based Nouri Bars can be a good way to curb hunger on the go.

Any type of all-natural, organic hemp bar that has high fiber content will help you feel full for longer than the much more fattening options available from fast food restaurants. Therefore, keeping a healthy snack with you while you run errands is a simple way to remove fat from your diet.

3. Reduce Cravings Naturally – It is easy to find appetite suppressants, but you do not have to give up the natural approach in order to reduce your cravings. For example, spinach extracts that contain thylakoids have been proven to help increase weight loss by as much as 43 percent, according to Science Daily.

4. Boost Your Social Network – Northwestern University published a study earlier this year that links a large social network with greater weight loss.

Researchers indicated that people who are socially active within an online weight management program will typically lose at least 8 percent more weight than participants who choose not to interact regularly with other community members.

5. Avoid Sugar – There have been numerous studies that have linked the consumption of sweets to weight gain, and it is clear that sugar is a bigger culprit of obesity than the fat content of your favorite meals.

Interestingly, some studies have found that the overall health benefits of exercising daily are more important than losing weight. For example, walking for 20 minutes a day may not be enough to help you drop down to the next pants size, but it will decrease your stress levels and help increase your life expectancy.

Therefore, even if you are not interested in losing weight this spring, you can still improve your overall health by incorporating a daily walk. Reducing the amount of sugar that you consume is also a good way to minimize your risk of developing diabetes.
