USDA expands recall of pork linked to Salmonella outbreak

As reported in Digital Journal on August 13, 201, a class I recall was issued by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) for approximately 116,262 pounds of whole hogs that may have been contaminated with Salmonella I 4,[5],12:i:-.

On August 27, an expanded recall of pork products from Kapowsin Meats was issued. The expanded recall now includes approximately 523,380 pounds of pork, to include all pork products associated with the source of contamination.

Besides the whole hogs for barbecue, the recall also includes “varying weights of boxed and bagged fabricated pork products, including various pork offal products, pork blood and pork trim,” according to the FSIS recall notice.

All the products have the establishment number “EST. 1628” inside the USDA mark of inspection. In addition to the initial dates of production that covered April 19, 2015, and July 27, 2015, the amended recall also includes Aug. 26, 2015, or an additional four weeks, Food Safety News reports.

The recalled products were distributed in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington state to individuals, retail locations, institutions and various other distributors. Consumers are strongly advised to not eat any of the products.

Kapowsin Meats is on voluntary suspension of operations
All the while the USDA/FSIS and state health department officials were investigating this case, Kapowsin was attempting to make sanitary improvements to the facility. FSIS has deemed the attempted improvements to be insufficient, and the company has agreed to a suspension of operations until sanitation in the plant is brought up to requirements.

For a current list of retail establishments affected by the recall notice, go to RETAIL CONSIGNEES FOR FSIS RECALL 110-2015. There are five retailers in Alaska, two in Oregon, and 27 retailers in Washington state.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
