Op-Ed: FDA list of companies in sunflower seeds recall is unbelievable

But I realized today, after getting two more alerts from the FDA and reading that Martin’s Foods, a local chain supermarket here in Richmond was recalling salads with sunflower seeds in them, that it would be interesting to go ahead and list, for the first time, all the recalls involving sunflower seeds and kernels.

The list includes companies that have distributed seeds and kernels, including packages of sunflower seeds and kernels, fresh salads with sunflower kernels, snack bars, cookies, mixed nut snacks, and 50-pound bags of sunflower seeds. These products have been shipped all across the country to distributors, retail stores, and institutions that include schools.

All I can tell you about the recall is that it is not over, but I would suggest that everyone refrain from purchasing and eating anything that contains sunflower seeds or kernels until the recall has ended. I don’t know how many seeds or kernels are in a pound of sunflower products, but as far as I can tell, there must be hundreds or even thousands of pounds involved in this nationwide recall.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
