According to a notice issued on August 12, 2016, by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), five branded products are being recalled, including Blue Mountain Brand, Jamaica Choice Brand, Ocho Rios Brand, Oriental Brand and Grace Brand curry powder blends.
The recalled products were distributed in New York and Florida and were sold nationwide in retail stores and through Internet sales.
The elevated lead problem first came to light on July 22, 2016, when a routine sampling program conducted by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets’ food inspectors detected elevated lead levels in Blue Mountain brand “Jamaican Curry Powder.”
The Jamaican Curry Powder was packaged and distributed by Eve Sales Corporation located at 945 Close Ave, Bronx, New York. Like the Gel Spice recall of turmeric powder earlier this month, Oriental Packing Company, Inc. has also expanded its recall to cover numerous brands of curry powder.
The products can be identified by the label bearing the above names in glass and plastic bottles. The sizes including 2oz, 4oz, 6oz, 8oz, 22oz and 5 lb. The product can be identified by the lot numbers and best before date. This information can be found on the top of the cap or at the bottom of the bottle.
Consumers are urged to dispose of any unused product following EPA and/or state and county regulations or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Please take this recall notice seriously because elevated lead levels in the human body can pose serious health risks, particularly to infants, small children, pregnant women, and those with underlying kidney disorders.
