Four hurt when gunmen open fire on bus crossing S.F. Bay Bridge

The shots were reported Saturday by the bus driver, who reported the vehicle being struck by gunfire as it exited the new eastern end of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and approached Interstate 880 in Oakland.

The shooting prompted the closure of I-880 for hours until around 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning, according to the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper.

Witnesses reported seeing a red SUV car pull up next to the bus and two gunmen begin shooting at 2:25 a.m.

There is no known motive at this time, the CHP said.

The bus had been traveling from San Francisco.

But many of the shooting victims declined to cooperate with officers who arrived in response to the shooting report, CHP Officer Daniel Hill said.

“Several of the bus’ occupants were combative, and one assaulted an officer who was attempting to interview her,” Hill said in a written statement.

“One of the injured victims got into an altercation with emergency medical personnel while she was being transported to the hospital, and ultimately forced her way out of the ambulance,” he said.

The woman’s injuries were considered minor, Hill said.

Only one of the four injuries was serious but that victim is expected to survive, he said.

The bus driver pulled off the bridge onto southbound 880, which was shut down from the bridge to Adeline Street in Oakland, the newspaper said.

The bus driver alerted CHP officers in Oakland about the shooting attack at 2:25 a.m., Hill said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call CHP investigators at (707) 551-4100.
