Hulk, world’s largest pit bull, is a sweet family dog

Pit bulls have a reputation for unprovoked violence against young children and are banned in some countries, including the U.K. In other countries, you need a license to keep a pit bull.

But as part of efforts to counter the popular belief that all pit bulls are mindlessly violent beasts, the owners of the world’s largest pit bull, whose business, Dark Dynasty K9s, breeds and trains guard dogs for high-profile clients and law enforcement agencies around the world, say they allow their freakishly large dog to play with their three-year-old son.

The Grennans say they trust Hulk so much that they even allow the little boy to ride the dog like a pony.

Marlon Grennan, 28, who became a dog breeder after an injury ended his boxing career, however admits that “a dog the size of Hulk could kill someone if it was in the wrong situation at the wrong time. The power of this dog is unrivaled. If it bit down on someone’s arm with full power it could snap it like a toothpick.”

But according to Grennan, Hulk, the 175 lbs dog with a 28-inch wide, still growing at 18 months, is “a wonderful, excellently trained dog. He plays with my kid, he’s great with the family and he’s so, so sweet.”

He added that his dogs “are very balanced and gentle – they are nanny dogs.”

“Because Pit Bulls are only in the media when bad things happen, this myth of them as monsters gets perpetuated. But it’s not true. They might not be for everyone, but under a good leader and with proper training, they make amazing family and work or protection dogs.”

A video shows Jordan, the Grennan’s 3-year-old son, playing with Hulk in their New Hampshire home, riding the dog, frolicking and even napping with him.

“I don’t think it’s irresponsible for people to have pit bulls and children. They’re dogs just like any other dog. No matter what the breed it is, it is hundred per cent how you raise them. The main thing with us is the level of care we put into these dogs. We are dogs, we live and breathe this world every single day, so the amount of care that goes into it is like nothing else in the world.”

The family-owned kennel, Dark Dynasty K9s (DDK9s), is a member of the American Dog Breeders Association and the United Kennel Club.

DDK9s breeds and trains American Pit Bull Terriers (APBT) as guard dogs.

The Grennans said they breed two categories of pit bulls. The first category consists of normal-sized pit bulls weighing about 35- 60 lbs. The second category consists of pit bulls bred for intimidating size.

For instance, Hulk, at 175 lbs, is almost three times the size of the average pit bull.

The pit bulls are raised on protein-rich diet with supplements. Hulk, according to his owners, eats 4 lbs of ground beef every day.

“A dog like Hulk can cost you anywhere from $2,500 to $25,000. I have one of his sons who might be sold for $30,000 just based on who he is, what he does and who we are. But I would never consider selling Hulk. I’ve been offered $200,000, $250,000, $500,000. You could throw ten million in front of me and I’d throw it right back at you. The dog is priceless, period.”

He said that although his dogs are safe, they are trained to express aggression and sheer power in the right circumstances so that they are able to provide protection to people when they need it.

“It’s very, very, important what I’m doing. I live in New Hampshire where there’s no crime and I don’t have to worry about that kind of stuff. I’ve got clients in terrible, terrible places. They don’t live in Candyland, they live in fear. And why should somebody else live in fear if they don’t have to. So that’s my job, to try to alleviate somebody else’s fear by giving them a family dog too.”

Lisa Grennan, 24, said that the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is a misunderstood breed of dog.

“I have no concerns about any of the dogs around my son,” she said. “They are amazing family dogs. People say these dogs randomly flip out, but that just doesn’t happen. They go through enormous amounts of training and are more used to going up against multiple grown men and hearing loud noises. So the little things a kid might do to startle a regular dog isn’t going to faze ours at all.”

Specialists train the dogs to be fearless guard dogs.

“These dogs are absolutely fearless because they are trained to be one hundred per cent fearless. They feel nothing. They know no defeat. We are constantly going to throw challenges in front of them because creating that fearlessness is what makes a good protection dog.”
