Review: Rachel Platten ethereal at 95.5 PLJ’s Stage 17 performance (Includes first-hand account)

Veteran on-air personality Race Taylor hosted this exclusive mini-concert. Taylor made the opening remarks, and subsequently described Rachel Platten as an “old friend.” “Are you ready?” Taylor asked the fans, prior to noting that they would let Rachel sing a few songs, followed by a question and answer session.

“Hi guys! How are you? I’m Rachel,” she said. “It’s nice to see some beautiful faces,” she added, praising the Stage 17 audience. She kicked off her set with “Fight Song,” and her live rendition was angelic, and simply too good to be mortal. Towards the end, it featured minimal acoustic guitar, and she had the audience clapping along. This performance moved several fans to tears and rightfully so, due to the rawness and authenticity of the lyrics. It is no wonder that this song catapulted her to pop super-stardom.

“Thank you guys,” she said, effusively. “This is a very fun song, and one that we love,” she continued, and immediately broke into her new song, the sassy and nonchalant “Good Life,” where she invited two of her team members on stage with her, to sing along.

“How are we doing? Good?” she asked. “This song is very important to me,” she said, prior to sharing that they are a lot of crazy things happening in the world right now. She revealed that her new single “Broken Glass” shows how bad-ass women can be when they come together. “I’m so excited for it,” she admitted. Her new single had moving and optimistic lyrics that many fans and listeners can relate to (“cause you know I’m a fighter, through to the other side, baby I’m on fire, cause you know I’m a survivor,” Platten sang).

“I am so happy to be here with my friends and these beautiful faces at 95.5 PLJ,” she said. “We have beautiful lives, and we are staying in the moment, and we need to appreciate it right now.”

She went on to compliment her talented and “beautiful” band that was comprised of such exceptional musicians as Dallin on keyboards and backing vocals, Ben on bass guitar, Neal on percussion and Ryan on acoustic guitar. Platten closed her eloquent set by serenading, Alex, a lady from her record label, Columbia Records, for her birthday, where she had everybody sing “Happy Birthday to her!”

The Verdict

Overall, Rachel Platten was able to put on a glorious live mini-concert at Stage 17 in New York City, as she premiered her new single “Broken Glass.” Her warm and bubbly personality was evident throughout her singing, and her question and answer session with radio host Race Taylor. She is certainly one of the best female pop recording artists of our generation. Her set at the newly-renovated Stage 17 garnered five out of five stars.
