Review: Carlene Carter exceptional at Forest Hills Stadium in New York (Includes first-hand account)

Carter kicked off her solo set with “Every Little Thing,” where she took her fans on a trip down memory lane to 1993. It was followed by the mid-tempo yet rocking “The Bitter End.”

Lily & Madeleine did a beautiful job singing “Gold Watch and Chain” with her, as Carter accompanied herself on acoustic guitar, and equally angelic was their live rendition of “Damascus Road.” Their harmonies with Carter were simply glorious. She closed her solo set on a fitting note with “Change.”

During Mellencamp’s headlining show, Carter returned to perform “Grandview” with him, in lieu of country star Martina McBride, where Carter sounded great. She had great vocal chemistry with Mellencamp, and enjoyed his company. Carter stayed on stage and harmonized with him and Emmylou Harris on the atmospheric “My Soul’s Got Wings.” Carter also sang harmonies on “Pink Houses.”

The Verdict

Overall, Carlene Carter was remarkable at Forest Hills Stadium in New York. She proved that she is one of country music’s most underrated female artists, and she knows how to rock. The talent is certainly in her genes (she is the daughter of the late country legend June Carter Cash). Carlene’s set garnered an A rating.
