This month, Kissel emerged as the big winner at the 2016 Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) awards.
Canadian country songstress Carolyn Dawn Johnson joins him on harmony vocals, and helps elevate it to a higher level. The music video has a subtle and haunting vibe to it. “I don’t feel pretty, my hair’s all a mess, tucked her curls underneath a ball cap, I just shook my head and said with a laugh,” he sings, in the opening verse.
The proceeds from the sale of “I Didn’t Fall in Love With Your Hair” from September 9 to October 28 will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society; moreover, entrepreneur and philanthropist W. Brett Wilson will match all of the money raised from the sale of the song during this period. The song is a track from his latest studio album, which was co-produced by Kissel, Mickey Jack Cones and Bart McKay.
“I Didn’t Fall in Love With Your Hair” is the male compliment to Martina McBride’s “I’m Gonna Love You Through It.”
The Verdict
Nobody tugs at the heartstrings like Brett Kissel does with his piano-driven ballad “I Didn’t Fall in Love With Your Hair.” This is by far the best song of his career, as well as a substantial indication that his recent CCMA wins were based on sheer talent and merit. Carolyn Dawn Johnson’s voice is as crystalline as ever. The song and its poignant music video earn five out of five stars.
