KT Tunstall talks Coney Island show, Tom Petty cover (Includes interview)

On June 27, 2018, Tunstall will be performing at the Coney Island Amphitheater in Brooklyn, New York, where she will be opening for Barenaked Ladies on their summer headlining tour. “I am looking forward to coming back to New York to play again,” she said. “It is super-exciting to open for them. The Barenaked Ladies fans have been absolutely amazing to me. They were completely engaged and so generous. I am so excited. I love Coney Island. I am a massive fan girl.”

Tunstall covered “I Won’t Back Down,” where she collaborated with Pearl Jam’s lead guitarist Mike McCready, where they both paid homage to the late Tom Petty. “That was so exciting to do,” she admitted. “We both just loved Tom Petty so deeply, and wanted to do something to honor him.”

On the digital transformation of the music business, Tunstall said, “Technology has made the music business pretty unrecognizable these days. In particular, the way that people consume music. Now, you have two generations of people who are not really used to paying for music, and that has had a huge effect on our system. Streaming is not conveying the financial support that it should for artists, and I hope that will improve in the future.”

Tunstall continued, “There are also positive things about technology. I love social media, and I love Twitter and I love that I can have really great direct communication with my fans, that I couldn’t easily have before. I really love the relationships that I have with my producers.”

She defined the word success as “The ability to spend my life doing what I want to do, so it is basically freedom for me.”
