Jonny P discusses ‘Good To You’ EP, songwriting inspiration (Includes interview)

On the song selection approach for his EP, he said, “Well, I wanted to create a micro world for the listener, and in order to do that there needed to be sonic and stylistic cohesion. So, we chose songs that would give us the best opportunity to wow without leaving wonder about my identity as an artist. It made choosing hard because there were favorites that didn’t fit in with the bunch. We’ll just have to save them for later.”

Jonny P’s favorite song on the EP is the title track. “It just feels so damn good from the first down beat until the last. I love the lazy-river feel of the organ moving through the chorus’ and the fatness of the beat. And it’s my daughters favorite,” he said.

His EP was produced by his guitarist Goffrey Moore, working in tandem with Jonny P, and it was mixed by Tom Elmhirst, who has worked with such artists as Adele, Frank Ocean, Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson) and it features James Gadson (Quincy Jones, Paul McCartney, Beck and BB King) on drums.

On his future plans, he said, “I plan to release a debut LP at the tail of this year, and put out a video for another fave on the EP, ‘Stand By.'”

When asked what inspires his songwriting, he said, “Sometimes it’s just hearing a phrase in passing that triggers emotion. Other times it’s an ‘eriffany’ (epiphany). I’ll just have a melody or a riff come to me and I instantly know it’s something worth exploring. Last but not least: life. I’m by far most inspired to write by things that I’ve seen with my eyes or seen in my dreams.”

For his dedicated fans, he concluded, “If you dig the EP share it! And I love you!”
