Chatting with Gareth Emery at ‘Electric Zoo: Wild Island’ (Includes interview)

On being at Electric Zoo, Emery said, “It’s amazing. It’s been five years since I’ve been here, and it has always been amazing. I am also relieved because of the weather, so to be here, and to see this beautiful sunset, I am happy.”

He shared that his DJ set will include six or seven tracks from his latest album, 100 Reasons to Live, as well as a few classics. “I always try to go with the moment. When you rehearse too much, you lose the feeling. I try to have a feeling of random element as well,” he said.

Emery is motivated by his desire to be better. “I’m never satisfied where I am, and I’m always looking for what’s next. I’m trying to be better as a parent, better in making music and better in health,” he said.

The inspiration for his music comes from the “everyday world.”

“I could be sitting on a plane, I’ll hear some music and I would record it into my phone, and that would be how a new track would start,” he said.

Emery had nothing but the kindest words for rising songstress Janet Devlin, who sings lead vocals on “Lost.” “Janet is an amazing talent. She is the one I would most like to do another song with. I would love to do another track with her,” he said.

For Emery, his music is all about evolution. “I never want an album to be the same as the last one. It has to be different and it’s all about evolution, and working hard, and being better every time,” he said.

Aside from piano, Emery revealed that he also plays guitar and drums. He listed, “Sansa,” which is track No. 13 on his latest album, as his personal favorite tune of his at the moment.

When asked where he sees electronic dance music in the next five years, he said, “A little bit less EDM and a little bit more melodic. I love the fact that EDM is always evolving, and it never stays the same. It is always changing.”

He listed British songstresses Ellie Goulding and Adele as his dream female collaboration choices.

For aspiring DJs, he said, “Focus on the music, instead of the social media. Music is really the most important thing.”

He described fatherhood as “The best gift I’ve ever had in my life. It has been incredible and life-changing in all the right ways,” he said.
