‘The Big Sick’ trailer isn’t promoting a typical rom-com (Includes first-hand account)

The beginnings of relationships, particularly as one gets older, can be difficult. People begin to feel like there’s less time to find “the one” and that most of the good fish have already been plucked out of the sea. Spending any extended period of time with someone quickly leads to, “can I see myself spending the rest of my life with this person?” However, even if one person answers in the affirmative, there’s no guarantee the other person will too. Unfortunately, sometimes fear makes people say things they don’t really mean… and there isn’t always an opportunity to take it back. All of these play out in The Big Sick trailer.

The dating scene is tough. Emily (Zoe Kazan) is having fun, but hasn’t found anything meaningful yet. Kumail’s (Kumail Nanjiani) family dinners include a revolving door of women as they try to arrange a suitable marriage for him. However, when Emily and Kumail meet each other, they both wonder where it could lead… though it turns out their opinions on the subject somewhat differ. But before Kumail has another chance to talk to Emily, she becomes gravely ill and comatose. So instead, he spends the following days sorting out his feelings with her family who unsurprisingly don’t have open arms for the man who broke their daughter’s heart.

This latest romantic comedy looks like a heartfelt journey about issues that plague a lot of couples, particularly those in interracial relationships. The top-notch cast also includes Holly Hunter and Ray Romano as Emily’s parents, who appear to have some interesting conversations with their could-have-been son-in-law. While the situation would seem immediately devastating, the film appears to find a way to naturally weave humour throughout. The movie opens July 2017.
