Joni Bovill talks ‘Bosch’ on Amazon Prime and Denzel Washington (Includes interview)

Regarding her experience on Bosch, Bovill said, “It has been good, actually. When I auditioned for Bosch, I was working on another show, How to Get Away with Murder, and I really wanted to audition for it. My husband gave them my audition tape, and we submitted it, and they liked it and they hired me. That was five seasons ago, and I have been blessed to be on Bosch.”

She continued, “I play Ida, the assistant to the Chief of Police, which is fun. Whenever they come to the Chief’s office, they have to go through me, to see the Chief.”

The actress shared that the web television series Bosch is based on the books by Michael Connelly. “Bosch is a very well-written show, and I think new fans will like it,” she said.

Bovill listed two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington as her dream male acting partner. “Who wouldn’t say Denzel Washington,” she said, with a sweet laugh.

Aside from How To Get Away with Murder, Bovill’s television credits include The Young and the Restless, How I Met Your Mother, Cold Case, The Bridge, Survivor’s Remorse, and State of Affairs, among others. She also played in the Netflix feature Come Sunday.

Digital transformation of the entertainment business

On the impact of technology on the entertainment business, Bovill said, “Bosch is an Amazon Prime show. I love it in two ways: it is really good for the makers of the content since it gives them a more leveled playing field. It is easier to get a show that everyone in the world can stream. On the opposite end, it has affected our paycheck since we don’t get paid as much, as if we were working on something on a primetime network. It is good because more and more things are streaming. I am hopeful that because of that, the demand will drive up the pay. I am hopeful that the pay will be more comparable to that of a primetime show.”

Bovill continued, “Streaming services are helping us, and they are closing the gap between the big movie stars and the everyday working actors. The quality of the acting work on the stream services is incredible.”

She revealed that her scripts for her roles are digital. “I don’t get any hard copies anymore. It is all watermarked, and they are all digital,” she said. “I like hard copies but we need to change and adapt with the times.”
