article imageJo Weil discusses 'Dance Dance Dance,' turning 40, fans Special

By Markos Papadatos     Sep 7, 2017 in Entertainment
Acclaimed German actor Jo Weil chatted with Digital Journal about "Dance Dance Dance," as well as turning 40 years old. He also discussed the digital transformation of modern cinema.
For Weil, Dance Dance Dance is a fantastic experience. "It's comparable to Dancing with the Stars, but in this prime time show I'm not dancing with a professional dancer but with another celebrity instead. Furthermore, we don't do ballroom dancing, but learn super cool choreographies from famous music videos and films. It's a sensational show and I'm super proud to be part of it. The first episode will air on September 8 on RTL, and I can't wait to see the final results. Once I've completed the taping, I will start filming for a popular German TV-Series. Unfortunately I'm not allowed to tell the name so far, but I hope my fans will enjoy my new part. Also, I just hosted a new pilot for a talk show-ish format and modeled for a male fashion editorial which will be published later this year."

The German heartthrob is proud of the success of his feature films Sodom and Lula. "That was amazing," he said. "I'm super proud of those two films and very happy, that we get such a fantastic feedback. The reviews for Sodom are great and this is special to me, as it is my first lead in an English feature film. I hope this will lead to more good projects. And speaking of Sodom, it will have its Italian premier in Florence later this month."
Digital transformation of entertainment industry
On the impact of technology on the entertainment business, Weil said, "Technology changed the way we watch films and series. A few years ago, you had to stick to your TV. Nowadays, you can watch whatever you want, whenever you want on so many different devices. The rise of platforms like Netfilx and Amazon changed the entertainment business a lot, but in my eyes, in a good way. Most of the shows I'm watching today are being produced (or at least streamed) by them."
Weil uses technology each day for entertainment purposes. "I love binge watching new series whenever I have some free time. It's the best thing to do when you are on a plane or train."
On the evolution of modern cinema thanks to technology, Weil said, "Modern cinema seems to have no boundaries. The effects get bigger and better and 3-D seem to be almost inevitable today. This led to the production of many blockbusters that couldn't have been produced a few years back in time. But honestly speaking I'm not sure if this is necessarily a good thing. As almost every new blockbuster seems to feel the need to be bigger, louder and more expensive than one before, I have the feeling that many films are more about showing off effects and less about the story they tell. This kind of annoys me. I hope there will still be some films that tell a good story and focus on the acting and emotions instead of effects."

In his personal life, Weil celebrated his 40th birthday. "Being 40 actually doesn't feel any different than being 39. The only difference is, that everybody seems to expect me to feel different," he said, with a laugh. "I'm super happy with my age and think no one should feel bad or worried just because he or she gets older. It's a natural thing and I love that with every day you live you gain new experiences and wisdom. That's a fantastic thing. I do some sports to stay in shape. I love running and to work out and I try to eat healthy. But I still love to have a pizza and some sweets every now and then, just not every day."
For his fans, Weil reiterated his gratitude for their support. "If you live in Germany, don't forget to vote. It's super important," he said.
