Catching up with Margaret Cho: ‘Fresh Off The Bloat’ Tour (Includes interview)

“It’s my new show, and it’s a representation of Asians in the media and in comedy. I had the first Asian-American family TV show, and now there’s a successful Asian-American show called ‘Fresh Off The Boat.” My show is a take on that. It’s called ‘Fresh Off The Bloat.’ It’s about fatness, fabulousness, and it’s fun,” Cho said.

On October 12, Cho will be performing two comedy shows at Gramercy Theatre in New York. “I can’t wait. I am thrilled. I love playing New York. It’s my favorite, so I can’t wait to come back,” she said. “I’ve got to pack them in. It’s crazy, since I’m in so many different places, and I just want to see everyone, which is really great.”

On August 19, she will be returning to Fire Island at the Ice Palace Nightclub for a stand-up comedy show. “It’s my favorite summer gig. I love Fire Island, and I love their beaches there. It’s really fabulous. That’s very exciting,” she said. “I’m going to be performing material from my new show, I’m going to be laughing and I’m going to be hanging out. It’s always great and crazy.”

Most recently, she was listed in Rolling Stone in the Top 50 comics list, thus ranking at No. 48. “I was very proud of that. It’s really cool. All my friends are on there too, so I feel I’m in great company,” she said.

In the future, she shared that she would love to collaborate with Comedy’s “Queen of Mean,” Lisa Lampanelli. “She’s amazing. I hope so someday. I would love to. That would be really cool.”

Throughout her career in the entertainment scene, she has been nominated for five Grammy awards, four of which were in the comedy categories. “It has been five times,” she said, about her career Grammy nominations total. “Hopefully, the sixth time will be the charm, maybe. I really want it. I don’t know what I have to do, but I’m going to get it this time,” she said.

Cho shared her love and appreciation for rock queen Joan Jett. “She’s amazing. I love going to see her. She’s my favorite person to go see. She’s so welcoming and I love it,” she said.

For her fans, she said, “It’s very funny, it’s really wild and crazy. I can’t wait to see them.”

Cho concluded our conversation by roasting this journalist, following her phone interview. “You are sick, and sickening, and fabulous, and I love it,” she said, with a sweet laugh.
