Real-life robbery
Schwarzenegger was not on the set of Why We’re Killing Gunther at the time of the attempted robbery, which took place shortly after noon on Thursday in Cloverdale, just outside Vancouver. At the time the crew was filming scenes requiring explosives.
Next to the movie-set is a Coast Capital Savings bank but police don’t believe the suspect, Jeffry Ozolins, 32, of no fixed address, knew a film was shooting on the lot next door. Not being aware was, of course, a mistake, as movies hire police officers — in this case RCMP members — to work security.
So there were lots about and when word came that a robbery was in progress they sprang into action. The robber managed to get out of the bank a description was sent out, heard by crew members. One saw a man matching the description and pointed him out to an RCMP officer and an arrest was made.
“Thankfully no persons were injured during this incident,” RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann told media. “But thanks to the film crew with a sharp eye, and the fast acting officer, this arrest was made in short order.”
Schwarzenegger action-comedy
Why We’re Killing Gunther is about a hit-man so good that others are sent out to do a hit on him. The action-comedy began filming in Vancouver in early July. It’s directed and written by former SNL cast member Taran Killam, who also acts in it, and features Schwarzenegger, engaged in an acting comeback since ending his political career.
It also stars noted Vancouver actors Cobey Smulders (How I Met Your Mother, The L Word), Peter Kelamis, (Stargate) and Vancouver Theatresports veteran Elizabeth Bowen (Fargo).
It’s unclear how far along in the robbery the suspect got, but there are no reports of injuries. Ozolins remains in custody and the film wrapped on Saturday.
