2016 NHL Draft: Maple Leafs looking to add depth with solid picks

Last year the team made some coaching changes and with that, a change in philosophy when it comes to selecting talent, both wit free agent veterans and young prospects. Player rankings won’t mean too much for the franchise when it comes to picking youngsters next month — system and size are more important as the franchise looks to break away from their losing ways.

The good news is the Leafs own the top pick and it’s hard not to imagine they won’t take Auston Matthews. The youngster is the top overall prospect and his leadership skills could make him the face of the franchise for the next decade.

Matthews is a front line center that could play on the wing if needed, but it appears Toronto wants a number one center to lead this team into the future and this 18-year-old looks the goods when it comes to everything he can do on and off the ice.

One of the top hockey sites has made a change in their latest mock and have the Maple Leafs taking a goalie with the 29th overall selection. Filip Gustavsson is a tall rangy net minder with terrific instincts for the game and with the team looking for depth and a potential number one goaltender, the youngster could be the future for this team.

With three picks in the second round, scorers with size are a priority. Management is now looking for more physical athletes to help in the rebuilding process and unless a top-tier player slips into round two, look for the front office to continue the search for big strong youngsters that could eventually help this franchise become a regular contender in the NHL Playoffs.
