Canadian trade ties to India set to rise (Includes interview)

India is Canada’s largest trading partner in South Asia and a key player in Canada’s Global Markets Action Plan. According to Patrick Brown, MP, who attended the summit as part of the Canadian delegation, the idea is to increase trading opportunities and partnerships between the two countries.

“This was the largest-ever Canadian led delegation to the Vibrant Gujarat Conference which helped to promote trade and investment partnerships, international security and expand the bilateral relationship between Canada and India. The delegation was joined by representatives from 14 Canadian Companies (predominately small and medium-sized enterprises looking at new commercial opportunities in India).

This year’s summit was a true indicator that India is quickly becoming a priority trading partner on a global scale. The summit aimed to identify possible investment intentions and strategic partnership agreements with over 110 countries participating. From Canada’s perspective, our bilateral relationship is supported by a wide range of agreements and it’s our goal to expand that network,” he said.

Current Canadian exports to India are valued at $2,800,467,962 and the figure can only go up, with a number of new ventures in the transportation, energy and natural resource sectors.

MP Brown pointed out that a number of new opportunities to increase trade had come up in the summit.

“ A partnership arrangement was signed, aimed at cleaning up the Ganges River using Canadian technology and expertise, as well as an agreement involving Canadian medical company Novadaq Technologies to market innovation technologies in India,” he said.

The Canadian government delegation also promoted the Express Entry immigration program (for skilled workers who want to come to Canada permanently) and highlighted the benefit of the Start-Up Visa Program.
