Personally, I've not participated in the February competition aimed at promoting local reporting, and I have my reasons. I live in a village of about 400 souls on an island few people know, a place where more or less "nothing ever happens", except that people die, babies get born, cats get overrun by cars and the local Orthodox priest recites his litany early Sunday morning.
However, throughout February I've watched with great interest how local stories have poured in more often than before, and I'm most curious as to when we'll get to learn about the result. I've seen the ad many times that promised a financial reward, but I've not seen who the judges are and when the result will be announced.
Does a story from a journalist on the ground in dangerously fascist Iran catch the eye of the jury, is it rather a photo essay by a gifted lover of the lens recording the Olympic winter games, or is it an article about the the movie Crazy Heart by an American woman with sometimes unfocused images but compassionate texts?
As someone who is rather old (62) yet still determined to learn, I'd really appreciate if I / we would get to know when a decision will be made ... and I hope that all of us here will get to know about it.
Knowing what type of reporting is most appreciated by the judges, will surely guide myself and others to make an attempt at matching this (elusive) quality.
