Review: TobyMac superb on new studio album ‘This is Not a Test’ (Includes first-hand account)

His CD opens with “Like a Match” and it is followed by the gorgeous collaboration with Hollyn entitled “Backseat Driver.” Capital Kings join him on the upbeat and spitfire title track tune and Hollyn reunites with TobyMac on “Lights Shine Bright.”

Til The Day I Die,” featuring rapper NF, is extremely radio-friendly and inspirational due to its strong melodies and compelling lyrics. “Feel It” has a funky vibe to it and “Move (Keep Walkin’)” is perhaps one of the highlight tracks on the album. Its lead single “Beyond Me” is infectious with a commercial vibe to it.

TobyMac’s album closes with such tunes as “Love Feels Like” and the heart-warming “Undeniable,” the latter of which is a vocal masterpiece, especially since he is able to hit the high notes and connect with his audience on a spiritual level. “Undeniable, you are, you are, Unmistakable, you are, you are,” he sings in this poignant worship tune. “But still you speak to my heart.”

The Verdict

Overall, TobyMac is back stronger than ever with This Is Not a Test. It is very different than his previous studio efforts, but it is still remarkable nonetheless. It showcases his ability to reinvent himself and keep things fresh and interesting. One can tell that TobyMac poured his heart on this project, and it will certainly touch his fans and listeners. Look for it at the top of the Billboard 200 all-genre charts within the next week. This Is Not a Test garners 4.5 out of 5 stars.
