Review: Steve Aoki charms on new ‘I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead’ documentary (Includes first-hand account)

This documentary film was a part of this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, and it was directed by Justin Krook, as well as produced by Matthew Weaver, Matt Colon (Aoki’s manager) and David Gelb. It gave the viewer an intimate look inside his life, which included commentary from his mother and sister, as well as his peers in the music industry, including Diplo and many other DJs. It also scrutinized his complicated relationship with his father, a man who had always put business and health above his family. His father, Rocky Aoki, was the Benihana restaurant tycoon and a former Olympian.

I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead was emotional at times, since it showed all the trials and tribulations that Aoki had to go through to be the electronic music phenomenon that he is today. It went on to receive a standing ovation from the Beacon Theatre audience, and it was followed by a noteworthy DJ set from Aoki himself.

His DJ set was upbeat and fun, and it featured some of his newest material. He also played cool remixes of Calvin Harris’ “How Deep Is Your Love,” as well as Adele’s “Hello.” Aoki was able to interact well with the crowd, jumping into the orchestra aisles at some point and singing along with them. His energy level was infectious. The more music he gave New York City, the more they wanted to hear.

The Verdict

Overall, his new documentary film is recommended for all fans of electronic music, and anybody who is interested in seeing a biography of a musician with an incomparable work ethic, who lives life to the fullest and would “sleep when he is dead,” to quote its title.
