Review: Canaan Smith electrifying at Pennysaver Amphitheater in New York (Includes first-hand account)

Smith began his set with the fun drinking tune “Hole in a Bottle,” where the stage was graced in orange and yellow laser lights. “Long Island, are you ready to drink your way out tonight? Am I the only one who’s trying to get drunk in New York tonight? I don’t think so,” he said, prior to taking a shot of whiskey with the audience. “I’ll tell you what. This is going to be the best part of our weekend. What do you say baby? C’mon.”

He premiered several new songs for his New York fan-base, all of which were well-received. These song included the mellow and laid-back “Come Back To Virginia,” “Didn’t Come Here To Get Sober ,” as well as the upbeat “Summer Six Pack.”

The highlight vocal performance was when he performed the melancholic and vulnerable “Bronco,” solo and acoustic, which was filled with raw emotions, and he was able to move his audience to tears. This song showcased his tremendous range and versatility as a recording artist.

Smith covered the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris,” and was able to outdo the original version, thanks to his dynamic vocals and his electric guitar playing. His entire band soared as well.

After a killer drum solo, he was able to belt out his signature song “Love You Like That,” which was sheer perfection. Every single fan was reciting the lyrics verbatim to him. “Yeah, Long Island,” he screamed, midway through the song, and finished it with a grand sing-along with the crowd. “Thank you so much New York. God bless you all. I can’t wait to come back to Long Island and party with you next time,” he concluded.

The Verdict

Overall, Canaan Smith was able to electrify the Pennysaver Amphitheater with his top-notch country-rock vocals. He was able to make a strong connection with the audience, who loved him in return. If one has yet to see Smith perform live, they ought to add a ticket to his concerts on their bucket list. They certainly won’t be disappointed, as he is one of Nashville’s brightest male country artists. His live show earned 5 out of 5 stars.
