Kirsten Arian talks new album, Sam Smith and Justin Bieber (Includes interview)

Arian was named “Music City Breakthrough Winner,” which was a good feeling for the songstress. “Honestly I didn’t see it coming at all. I was in the midst of trying to figure out how to make being an artist work and was feeling very at the end of my rope and worn out. Winning was such an amazing redefining moment that this is what I’m meant to do and I have what it takes to do it. Best feeling in the world,” she said.

On the song selection for Higher Than Heaven, she said, “About three months before, I knew I would be recording an album, I started writing for one. I wanted something that would be 100 percent me so I chose the ones that I thought represented me the best and ended up with the ones you hear now. It was easy in some senses cause I knew which songs I liked the best and I had the space to use all of them. Something that’s really important to me is believing every word I sing so I made sure each song was a piece of me and something I can get behind 100 percent.”

Arian listed “With or Without You” as her favorite song on the album at the moment. “It changes every week, but I keep going back to this song. I’m just really proud of the way it turned out and for some reason I feel so connected to it even though I wrote it for my best friend,” she said with a laugh.

Regarding her song “Queen,” she said, “It’s kind of a funny story, you know I had heard so many horror stories about the music industry and I wanted to write a song basically talking about ‘The Beast’ and how instead of bowing down to it, it has to bow down to me. That’s kinda the whole thing. ‘You’re a Prince but I’m a Queen.’ I think we all have the ability to rise above our fears and this song is about doing just that, and seeing through a shiny facade. I wanted the song to be fun and allow people to dance and laugh in the face of their beasts. At the same time I love that it can empower women and encourage them to not settle for anything less than a king.”

Regarding her plans for the future, she said, “Right now, I’m hoping to do a campaign at different schools to perform and encourage kids to dream passionately, love furiously and live fully. But I also hope to take this album on the road and tour with it. The future used to scare me, now I’m just excited to see what happens.”

She listed British singer Sam Smith as her dream male duet choice and she described his voice as “the honey butter that she used to put on cornbread.” “It would be really cool to do a song with Justin Bieber. His new stuff is really beautiful and there’s this rawness to it that I love,” she said.

“Thank you for encouraging me to keep going and never give up. You matter, not because of what you do or what your capable of but just because your alive and that matters. And keep dreaming keep pursuing what you love. There’s a lot of people in this world but there will never be another you. Your dreams are unique, your passions are unique and your mind is unique. You are beautifully unique, so don’t give up the world needs you to shine even brighter,” she told her fans.
