Interview: Steven Tyler talks ‘Out on a Limb’ solo summer tour (Includes interview)

Regarding his solo summer tour, Tyler said, “It’s called ‘Out on a Limb.’ It kicks off July 2 at The Venetian in Vegas. It is the most phenomenal band, Loving Mary, that I get to sing with. It is going to be all that, plus so much more.”

Tyler noted that the tour runs until September 13, where it wraps up in Toronto, Canada, and he is in the process of finishing up his upcoming album. “I sent the masters to Big Machine last night so we’re good to go. We’re launched,” he admitted. “It’s like summertime here in Nashville, and it’s just perfect launch the album weather.”

When asked what he is looking forward to on this tour, Tyler said, “It’s a cross probably between the looks on people’s faces when we rip into either this new version of ‘Janie’ that I put together, and it’s going to be on the record. It’s a little bit darker than the other version but it’s countrified a little. Also, the look on people’s faces when I rip into ‘Only Heaven’ and ‘We’re All Somebody from Somewhere.'”

Tyler shared that he has talented beautiful and talented backing vocalists. “Three of us sing so the backgrounds are delicious. I got three girls in the band so we’re beautiful to look at,” he said. “I’m in such a high place right now because Nashville’s been so good to me in the last year and a half.”

The iconic rocker managed to put together 16 songs on his new solo album, which came out better than he ever expected. “I’m looking forward to playing all those songs live,” he said. “It’s stuff like that that I still look forward to that just tweaks my passion and makes me feel so good. To collect marbles, it’s like panning for gold and after you get little particles and then after a year you put it all together and you got a big bowl of it. It just feels like that right now. And the music is good and the vibe here in Nashville is ridiculous.”

He praised the soul and passion in Nashville, Tennessee. “Here, it’s still alive and the passion fuels that and I’m right stuck in the middle of it. So I’m loving it and I can’t wait to get on the tour with my country band, if you will,” he said. “There’s something so magical about this town and me writing with all these people that whatever you hear, oh yeah, it was magic. A lot of work went into it and I got to write with Dan. I mean, to produce, co-produce with Dann Huff and T Bone Burnett.”

Tyler’s new studio album, We’re All Somebody from Somewhere, will be out on July 15, via his record label, Dot Records, an imprint of the Big Machine Label Group. It is available for pre-order on iTunes by clicking here.

The Aerosmith front-man has served as a judge for American Idol for two seasons, along with global music star Jennifer Lopez, where he had to give constructive criticism to aspiring singers. “It was easy for me. It was hard at first because they wanted me to be more like opinionated and rocked out and make people’s eyes roll. I didn’t feel comfortable telling them, you know what, you suck. Who told you you could sing? Get out of here,” he said.

Tyler shared that his “biggest role” was sitting next to fellow judges Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson on the panel. “I fell so in love with her and she knew it and we made each other blush a lot of times, and I love that. I loved being next to her and feeling her love. She’s a very strong woman and beautiful and I was enamored by her and her smarts for music. I think she’s a dynamic musician, singer and dancer,” he said complimenting Lopez. “And I got such joy out of talking with Randy Jackson. He is such a great personality, TV personality.”
