Interview: Delta Heavy discusses new ‘Paradise Lost’ album (Includes interview)

On the song selection for their “Paradise Lost” LP, they said, “We kept writing until we felt that the album gelled together and worked as a body of music. We actually handed in a version of the album over a year before it came out but we weren’t happy with all of the songs on there and it felt quite disjointed so we scrapped about 5 tunes and went back to the studio and kept writing which was probably the best decision as we came back with Oscillator, Event Horizon, Cut Me, Paradise Lost and Pathways and these tracks really worked alongside the singles and gave the album the overall mood we were looking for. Once we had a full running track list we went back in the studio again and wrote ‘Limbo’ and ‘Ascending’ as interludes which bridged parts of the album together that felt like different chapters.”

When asked if they were going for a certain theme, they said, “It’s hard to describe what we were aiming for theme wise but we knew we had it once we got there. We have used the themes of space and large scale drama in our songs as we have often referenced movies when writing dance floor tunes like Event Horizon. We wanted the album to feel like a piece of work that would be an audio journey when listened to from beginning to end, so maybe you could compare the album to a movie in that it tells a story through music.”

Their plans for 2016 include a great deal of touring. “We’ve been touring in Australia, UK, Europe, US & Canada and Russia and now we’ve got a summer of festivals on the horizon and we’re really excited to be playing Glastonbury and Reading & Leeds Festivals for the first time as well as being back at EDC Las Vegas, SW4 and Creamfields amongst others. We’ve also started writing new music with the aim to have some new tunes out by the end of the year.”

Regarding the future of electronic dance music, they said, “It’s hard to judge really as things move so quickly and it only takes an artist or two to come through and completely change the trends in sound but the bigger picture is that I think it’s going to keep growing and we will see parts of the globe like Asia, South America and India becoming more involved with what is now a predominantly European / American / Australian focused scene. Bearing in mind that it has been at the forefront of music globally for the last 5 years now, I can only see it growing and the culture deepening as this is what the kids have grown up listening to so this is what is going to inspire them as they become taste makers and producers. It already dominates the charts and a lot of pop music is just dance music with pop top-lines over it. The one thing I pray for is something to happen in the technology of music production that enables people to be creative in a brand new way, just like synthesizers did in the 80s. I think this is the only thing that will cause music to evolve radically. That said, it has never been easier to be incredibly creative with everything you need at your fingertips if you can find a truly original angle.”

For their fans, they concluded, “A huge thank you for supporting our music and coming to see our shows. We’ve really enjoyed 2016 so far. Look out for White Flag VIP which is coming out in a few weeks time.”
