The five tracks on the new record were all co-pened by Smith and are a sampling of what’s to come from her forthcoming studio album. “I’ve been a songwriter in Nashville about seven or eights years, and I have been writing for other people for lots of years. When I started writing for this record, I switched gears a bit, and I focused on writing for myself. I picked stories that I’ve lived, and said things that I’ve felt, and decided to write about that instead,” she said.
Smith listed “This Town Is Killing Me” as her personal favorite song on the album. “It’s so raw and it’s really straight out of my story. I love that one,” she said, prior to nothing that she draws her songwriting inspirations from a “variety of places.”
Over the last several years, Smith has written songs for such Country Music Hall of Famers as Garth Brooks, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, as well as “Best New Artist” Grammy winner Meghan Trainor, among others. She listed singer-songwriters Chris Stapleton and Paul Simon as her dream male collaboration choices in music.
Country Music Television (CMT) is going to premiere her new music video for “Tacoma” on July 12. The song was co-written by Smith and Bob DiPiero and it was previously recorded by Garth Brooks. “I’m so excited about it,” she said.
Earlier this year, the songstress partnered with Amtrak Trains, where she set out on a cross-country songwriting retreat with DiPiero, Rollie Gaalswyk, Ruston Kelly and Starfire producer Paul Moak from Nashville, Tennessee, to Tacoma, Washington, via Chicago and Seattle.
The songstress noted that she is expecting her first child at any moment, which she revealed is going to be a baby boy.
