Interview: Ben Gold opens up about future plans, EDM and Garuda (Includes interview)

A live performance by Ben Gold performance consists of “loads of energy.” “I am always feeding off the crowd and the dance floor so what I play really depends on their mood and energy also. The show is just as much about the people as it is an energy exchange of sorts. I always love to test out the latest IDs and new promos I receive for #GoldrushRADIO,” he said.

When asked if there are there any tracks that he has had to cut from his sets based on time or trying to promote all of his new material, he responded, “In club sets, there aren’t any restrictions as to what I can play. The dance floor is my inspiration, so the more I road-test new material, the better evaluation I get. Festival shows are different, especially the ones that are a live broadcast. Some records have to be cut from sets that are broadcasted live, but it’s usually two or three at the most.”

Regarding his upcoming studio album, he revealed, “I am finishing up several new collaborations as well as a couple of brand new remixes; all of which I am really excited about and proud of. I also have a new solo track ‘Interstate’ which is going to be out on Armada on September 4. Once all of this material is released, the focus will be squarely on the album or maybe even EPs. When putting out an album, it is crucial to me that every track justifies its release so I will be spending a lot of time getting it just right.”

When asked if he feels any pressure in this music industry, he said, “The pressure I feel is usually from myself; I always want to better myself as a producer and DJ, so I am always trying to push myself as much as possible to be the best I can possibly be, and to find new ways to express myself creatively.”

Gold added, “For most artists, you are judged on your last track, so I am always striving to push myself in the studio as well as on stage as a live DJ.”

His remix of Nenes and Pascal Feliz’ “Platinum” was the song that really launched him into the limelight. “That with a solid release schedule with Garuda. It was more a combination of a couple things, and timing,” he said.

Gold is drawn to electronic music due to its “connection between the artists and the fans and sense of community that has always existed.” “Some of my very best friends are the guys I get to tour with so it always feels a bit like this big travelling circus. The music for me is quite simply my passion; I listen to electronic music every single day and the way the producers and artists are constantly pushing production boundaries, is a real inspiration to me,” he said.

On working with Gareth Emery on the new box-set collection album, he said, “Garuda has obviously been a huge part of my professional life for a long time and on a personal level. I think he is one of the most down-to-earth, genuine people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing so to be asked to feature a guest mix on the Garuda box-set was a bit of an honor. I have a lot of history with the label and it has been brilliant to see it grow to become what it is in a relatively short period of time.”

He listed Florence Welch from Florence + The Machine and Sarah Howells as his dream female collaboration choices.

On the future of electronic dance music, within the next five years, he said, “I think it will continue its rise in popularity, I just can’t see it going backwards! Music is like fashion, so we can expect a different trends in and over the next five years.”

For his fans, he concluded, “I would like to say thank you to anyone who may have downloaded my tracks or come out to a party to spend their weekend with me. I feel really lucky to have received the support that I have and really appreciate the people who make it possible for me to do this for a living. I’m really excited to share the new tracks with you guys.”
