Interview: Babyface’s musical director Nomad opens up about music (Includes interview)

On being the musical director of Babyface, he said, “It’s definitely an honor to work for someone who has amassed such a large body work and who is esteemed by millions around the globe. As the universal truth resounds, ‘To whom much is given, much is required,’ and that is especially the case here. Although there is much prestige with the position of Musical Director (essentially an interchangeable term for ‘band leader’), it also requires an extreme amount of attention to detail in regards to the music, but also the necessary managerial skills to unite all band members for the sole purpose of serving the muse – which in this case is the extensive music catalog of Babyface. People are often surprised at how many songs he’s written and produced for other artists. But just like with any other prolific songwriter, when you write a song it really has no boundaries as to how it will come out, or who will best serve its artistic actualization.”

Regarding his future plans, he said, “Being the Nomadic modern musician that I am, originally from NY, I moved to Los Angeles from Nashville to pursue a career in Film and TV music and my own artist career. Although I’ve had some good successes in the area of Film/TV music working with renowned film composers Danny Elfman, John Powell and A.R. Rahman, I’d like to continue composing for the screen in my own right and explore more opportunities as an artist with soundtrack placements of my own songs.”

Nomad continued, “As of now I’m writing songs and composing cues on a regular basis to help perpetuate this vision with a music library company I co-founded called Perpetual Music Group. With a library of well over 10,000 cues and songs in a plethora of genres, PMG has been providing the underscore for a wide array of shows.”

Throughout his career, he has worked with such musicians as Sam Moore (from the hit Motown-era duo Sam & Dave), Stevie Wonder, Sting, Barbra Streisand, and of course, the late great Natalie Cole.

When asked what motivates him each day, he responded, “My daily motivation comes first from the innate responsibility to myself to be the best version of what God has created me to be, which basically means I set a very high standard to adhere to in anything I do. Second, to provide for my family and to help my daughter fulfill the dreams that she’ll one day envision just as my parents have done for me. If it wasn’t for my folks being so supportive of my chosen career path and dreams, I would not have made it this far! In addition to that, daily motivation is compounded by the realization that opportunities are abounding in every area of life! You never know where the next creative spark will come from, or where the next collaborative opportunity will bring about incredible art and life-long relationships with people who are of like mind and spirit.”

For his fans, he said, “Staying connected with fans is easier than ever these days with social media so I’m pretty active on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and working towards building some really cool informative videos for my YouTube channel. My posts typically are music related and even more specifically guitar related, however I try to keep it fresh and interesting so people can see what a day in the life of Nomad is really like. Fans can reach me by using #AskNomad on Twitter, to ask me any music related question and I’ll answer them! If it’s too long of an answer I’ll make a blog post on my Tumblr account.”
