Catching up with Gareth Emery: New album, Miami, fatherhood (Includes interview)

On being at Miami for the 2016 Winter Music Conference, he said, “It feels good. We have been working hard, but it has been great.”

The music video for his new song “Reckless” was filmed in New Zealand. “There is a lot of amazing scenery in New Zealand, so we found a director that filmed it in New Zealand. It worked out good,” he said.

This year, Emery will be out on tour promoting his forthcoming album, 100 Reasons to Live. On April 13, he will be playing at Output in Brooklyn, New York. “The first couple of dates will be in really small venues,” he said. “Basically, it is all about playing new songs from the album, so it is super-exclusive. It should be fun.”

When asked how fatherhood is treating him, Emery said, “It is amazing. She just turned one year old last weekend. It has gone so quickly, but it is amazing. It is life-changing in all the best ways.”

In the next five years, he foresees the return of melody in electronic dance music. “Dance music always goes in phases. It is constantly changing and evolving. I think we are going to see things go more into the more melodic and songwriting-based direction,” he said.

Each day, Emery is motivated by his desire to be better than the day before. “I am trying to be a better producer and a better parent, and on another level, I am trying to enjoy the ride as much as possible,” he said.
