Prince: Autopsy to find cause of death scheduled for today

Death of Prince

The 57-year-old superstar was found unconscious and unresponsive in an elevator in his Minneapolis home/compound at around 9:30 on Thursday morning. The Sheriff of Carvery County, Jim Olson, said his deputies were called to the scene at approximately 9:43 a.m., along with paramedics.

Prince was given CPR, Sheriff Carver said, but the paramedics were unable to revive him and despite their efforts, at 10:07 a.m., he was pronounced dead.

It is being reported on a number of media outlets, including the Associated Press, that after cancelling two concerts in Atlanta due to illness, Prince performed in that city on April 14. He apologized to the crowd for cancelling the concerts due to illness but did not elaborate.

He told the crowd he’d been “under the weather.” By all accounts he sang and performed well during that 80 minute concert.

Prince party

While flying back to Minneapolis Prince became ill on his private jet and an unscheduled stop had to be made in Illinois. Once back home reports say that he was unhappy with media reports that he was ill.

In what friends say they believed was an effort to show his fans that he was fine, he held a dance party at his home/compound on April 16. The Purple Rain singer spoke briefly to the party, telling them he was well and that media exaggerated his illness.

Friends say he did not, however, stay long at the party. To date, his appearance there is the last information that has been made public on his activities before his passing.

It is unclear when the results of the autopsy will be made public. There were some reports that he had had a severe case of influenza.
