Episode 22 of Yona of the Dawn, titled “The Night History Is Made,” is currently streaming on Crunchyroll, FUNimation, and Hulu for paid subscribers. Free subscribers can watch the same episode seven days from now on March 17th. This is the night that the titular Yona, the main heroine of this story, shows what she is truly capable of.
Jaeha comes to save the night when Yona and Yun have the living s—t beaten out of them, but Yun laments on his ability to save her from harm. It is obvious that he feels inadequate, but physical strength was not meant to be his main forte.
Yona’s praise towards Yun’s ingenuity shows that Hak and the Dragons would be f—ked without his help.
The Dragons are special because they unique abilities, but they are normal human beings without them.
Ji-Ha’s right hand is special, Shin-Ha’s eyes are special, and Jae-Ha’s right leg is special. They still possess the weaknesses of normal humans. Hak, though he is not a dragon, can be a total blockhead outside combat.
Yun’s strategic, tactical, culinary, and medical skills are invaluable to the team.
This battle against Kumji’s forces obviously shows that Hak and the Dragons are susceptible to fatigue, which is why one group is dedicated to fighting and the other is dedicated to rescuing Yona. I was surprised that Captain Gigan easily held her own ground in the fight.
Yona obviously has Kumji’s undivided attention when putting two and two together.
Kumji’s arrogance gets the best of him when he refuses to admit that Gigan and Yona managed to undo what he has spent over 30 years to build, but it happened anyway. He clearly underestimates Hak and the Dragons, but it will likely be a battle between archers as Yona has become proficient with the bow and arrow.
This is proven when Kumji manages to distract Jaeha to shoot him down from the sky, but only to tremble in fear when Yona stares at him with murderous intent. I wasn’t surprised that Yona managed to get a shot on Kumji, which forced to fall into the water.
I have a suspicion that Kumji might have survived the arrow shot because it didn’t hit his heart.
The victory calls for a huge celebration, but it is shortly lived when Yona runs into Soo-Won, the perpetrator of her father’s murder.
Yona and Soo-Won lock eyes for the first time since that incident.
This episode centers on the theme of armed revolt against a brutal dictator, which is never easy because of the high casualty rate. It was finally time to strike because of Yona’s arrival, which proved to be helpful on the sole fact that Kumji had plenty of hired help.
It also shows the role of women during ancient times as they were often used as merchandise. Yona has become the personification of the empowerment of women.
