Carrot Top talks comedy show at the Luxor, career and Criss Angel (Includes interview)

On his permanent show at the Luxor Hotel Casino, he said, “It’s crazy. It has been really good. I got to be honest, I never thought I would be here this long. It has been a blessing. I am really glad how it turned out.”

He shared that his great influences in comedy include the late Robin Williams, Jonathan Winters and Don Rickles. “There are so many comics growing up that I watched when I was a kid, and a lot of them are still doing it,” he said.

Regarding his plans for the future, he said, “You never know. That’s what is so fun about this career. Hopefully, some more movies and maybe some television. I did a little part in Melissa McCarthy’s next film called Michelle Darnell.”

He listed actress Melissa McCarthy as his dream female acting choice, and praised her for being “brilliant.” He noted that he knows comedian Margaret Cho quite well and dubbed her as “awesome.” “I should do something with Margaret Cho. That would be funny. It would be a good contrast,” he said.

Carrot Top had nothing but the greatest remarks for magician Criss Angel and his multiple appearances on his hit television show, Mindfreak. “Criss is a great guy. I see him almost every night. We park in the same area. He’s great and has always been nice to me from day one,” he said.

He is a very self-motivated person. “I get up in the morning, and I run and do a little treadmill, and I have a little lunch and I get ready for my show,” he said.

Carrot Top is extremely fond of the country genre of music, and shared that he was listening to the newest Alan Jackson album. “I love country music. I was literally just playing the new Alan Jackson CD earlier. It is really good,” he said.

Born Scott Thompson, his stage name came about “very early on.” “I was sitting around in college, and I went back to my dorm and I was thinking about a stage name and I thought ‘Carrot Top’ and drew a little logo, and then I went on stage, and it stayed that way since. I had a logo before I had an act,” he said.

On the key to longevity in comedy, he said, “You need to work hard. I never back down and I keep my show fresh, and I enjoy my job so much. It helps me keep it going, and I get excited going to work. All that, plus a little bit of luck too.”

“I have the best fans in the world. I read all my fan-mail and they have been so complimentary, and I appreciate them sticking around all these years. It has been fun to see my fans grow. Some of them have been coming to my shows for 30 years,” he said.
