Emma Thompson eats up to 20 sponges per day

The 23-year-old woman eats them because of a strange addiction. Thompson, from Wallsend, North Tyneside, said she was just 3-years-old when she started to chew bath sponges before finding out that she liked how the kitchen sponges tasted.

Pica, an OCD-type condition, is what Thompson suffers from. This causes her to crave items that have no nutritional value. Thompson described sponges as being her guilty pleasure.

The sponges are soaked overnight in the flavored dish washing liquid, and then Thompson enjoys one first thing in the morning.

On average, Thompson goes through at least two sponges per day, but sometimes she goes through a pack of 10 or 20 sponges, but usually that happens if she is really stressed out.

When Thompson heads to work, she usually packs a few sponges in her lunchbox. As of now, she doesn’t plan on seeing a doctor about the condition. However, she did say she will see a doctor if her condition worsens or if it starts to control her life.

It’s not clear what kind of medical effect eating sponges could have, or if there are any medical effects associated with eating sponges.
