Castro suffered a sudden bout of perforated intestine on a Cuban flight in 2006, according to a new diplomatic cable from the whistleblower site WikiLeaks.
BBC News reports an unnamed source writing, “the illness began on the plane from Holguin to Havana.” The flight was short and no doctor was on board and they had to land urgently once they knew of Castro’s bleeding. He somehow contracted diverticulitis of the colon.
He decided to refuse major surgery which lead to his deteriorating health and handover of power to his brother Rahul.
The report concludes about Castro: “He won’t die immediately, but he will progressively lose his faculties and become ever more debilitated until he dies.”
The Cuban government has long tried to keep Castro’s health a secret.
Interestingly Castro recently praised WikiLeaks’ missions, Rianovosti writes, saying the cables releases show “how the world’s most powerful empire in history can be defied.”
