The U.S. Space Force, the newest branch of the US military, on Tuesday unveiled a new uniform prototype for its members, known as Guardians. The uniforms drew comparisons by many social media users to ones from “Star Trek” and “Battlestar Galactica.”
General Jay Raymond, commander of the US Space Force, announced the new uniforms during his speech at the Air Force Association’s Air, Space, and Cyber conference in Maryland, on Tuesday, according to CNN News.
The prototype dress uniform includes a dark navy coat, six buttons running diagonally up the right-hand side, and grey pants. The new uniforms mark a change from the Air Force dress blues that the Space Force uniform was derived from in 2019, according to Military.com.
There is some symbolism involved in the creation of the uniform. General Raymond said the six buttons, which have the Space Force emblem, are meant to symbolize the Space Force being the military’s sixth service, reports The Hill.
Lt. Col. Alison Gonzalez, the Space Force deputy chief of strategy who modeled the new uniforms at the conference on Tuesday, reportedly said the prototypes were designed taking women into account, which is a diversion from the military’s usual strategy of creating uniforms for men then adjusting them for women.
The U.S. Space Force also announced the physical training uniform prototypes. The physical training uniform is more casual and includes a T-shirt with the US Space Force symbol on the right side of the shirt’s front and Space Force written in capital white letters across the back.
The shorts and sweatshirt are black, and both include the US Space Force symbol on them. Second Lt. Mahala Norris models the physical training uniform prototype in a short promotional video that the US Space Force tweeted from its account.
Former President Donald Trump established the US Space Force in 2019 when he signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act. In doing so, Trump created the newest military service and the first new service since the US Air Force was created in 1947.
A year ago, Twitter users had a field day with the announcement that new uniforms were being designed for the US Space Force, And some of the tweets were very funny and outlandish. With today’s announcement, just about everyone on Twitter was making comparisons to the sci-fi series “Star Trek” and “Battlestar Galactica.”
All I can say is that being a big Star Trek fan, Yeah, the new uniforms do sort of look like what Captain Kirk qo0uld wear5.
