U.S. agents seize thousands of fake condoms in Puerto Rico

The condoms were produced in China, according to a statement that the US Customs and Border Protection agency released on Thursday. Over the course of five days, the condoms were seized by officials with Homeland Security and the Food and Drug Administration, as well as immigration and custom agents.

Federal officials warned that the fake products would probably not protect against sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancy. The materials the condoms were made with can cause health problems, too.

Vernon Foret, Acting Director of Field Operations for the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, said the CBP works with partners to protect consumers in America from dangerous imported products that threaten their health and safety. He said fake produces threaten the country’s economic security.

Such goods that come into the country are inspected for toxins and by-products. In the past, cosmetics have been found to contain all sorts of hazardous stuff, including urine, rat droppings and cyanide.

Ricardo Mayoral, a special agent with Homeland Security investigations, said trafficking fake goods isn’t just illegal, but they can become a problem of public health. He said at times national security can be threaten because of counterfeit goods.

Fake condoms and other contraceptives have been seized in the past. Such shipments originated from China. In one incident, an international ring of counterfeit condom manufacturers were closed down after millions of condoms were ready for shipment. The fake condoms purported to be big name brands such as Durex. The shipments were found in warehouses throughout east and central China in 2013.
