Two killed in Wales steel factory explosion

-

Two people died and four others were hospitalised after an explosion at a steelworks in Cardiff, according to a spokeswoman for the company.

Witnesses heard a loud bang before seeing smoke rising into the air at the Celsa Steel UK plant in the Welsh city.

"It is with great sadness that we can confirm that two colleagues have passed away and four have sustained minor injuries," a spokeswoman for Celsa said.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with those affected and their families, who have been informed. Our utmost priority is to support all of those involved."

The injured were taken to the University Hospital of Wales.

"There was a massive bang. We all felt the floor shake. It was very worrying seeing lots of ambulances and fire engines go in there," said one man who was working nearby.

The factory was evacuated and the bodies of two workers were discovered after a search.

Celsa Steel UK, owned by one of Europe's biggest steel manufacturers Celsa Group, employs about 500 staff on the site according to its website.
