Toronto Mayor John Tory to pitch SmartTrack to federal government

Tory will leave Toronto later this afternoon for Ottawa, and will meet with NDP leader Thomas Mulcair, Liberal leader Justin Trudeau, as well as Minister of Transportation Lisa Raitt.

He will present his case for SmartTrack, a sophisticated transit plan that is estimated to cost $8 billion.

The plan was approved one week ago by city council who voted in favor of the amount of $1.6 million in order to study the idea further.

Last year Tory met with Prime Minister Stephen Harper in December after he was sworn in. A large part of their meeting was concentrated on Tory’s transit plan, which is “to build a 22-stop, heavy rail line that stretches from Mississauga, through Union Station, to Markham.”

While in Ottawa, Tory will also try to advance his concerns with Toronto’s affordable housing issues, which he has discussed before as a salient concern for the city at present.
