Raising some eyebrows in Toronto is this Toronto Sun article linking absentee black fathers to the rise of gun violence in Toronto. Goldstein says the black nuclear family is so badly bruised by a single-parent system, children are easily swayed into joining gangs and perpetuating gun violence across the city.
Racism plays a part in this problem, he writes, saying,”It starts with decent kids living in the communities dominated by the gangs having to lie about where they live, even to apply for minimum wage, after-school jobs, because otherwise employers won’t even look at their applications.”
His ideas for “the real remedies to black crime” include sexual restraint, fidelity, delayed gratification, self esteem, family and financial planning.
Goldstein adds, “We should allow school boards to tax again, subject to annual audits proving the money raised is being invested in effective programs to bolster student performance in our most vulnerable communities.”
His column spread quickly online, angering some Twitter users. One user named Emma Marcon tweeted: “I’m not racist – I just think black men are bad fathers.” – @sunlorrie, essentially
NOW magazine writer Ben Spurr wonders, “How does @sunlorrie know that black men are disproportionately attempting to impregnate as many women as possible…?”
A commenter on reddit remarked, “‘Absentee fathers are the cause of these problems!’ ‘Institute harsher sentences to further keep fathers from families!’ Yeah. That’s worked so well in the past.”
Toronto has been making headlines for several recent high-profile shooting deaths, including one at Eaton Centre and a more recent shooting in Little Italy.
