Tornado warning near Sacramento, Ca.

Snow fell at low elevations today in the rural foothills, however, that news made way for the tornado warning being reported by local news stations, including KCRA Channel 3 in Sacramento. Thunderstorms moving through the area of Folsom Lake, and across to the town of Cameron Park and into El Dorado County triggered a reported tornado today late this afternoon.

Wind damaged trees, reports of roofs being torn off, hail falling were the focus of the reportage. As of 4:30 p.m. today, the tornado warning has now been lifted for the area to the south of Sacramento. Normal reportage for the mid-west, but not so much for the West Coast, and especially not for the central valley areas of California.

East of Highway 49, south of highway 50, the damage was nothing like the mid-west tornado alley residents would see, but with such a rare phenomenon, the news stations are all abuzz with the hail, tree damage and any possible structural damage which will be reported.

It does appear at this time, there are no reports of injuries resulting from the tornado and strong winds, which reportedly reached as much as 80 m.p.h.

Beyond the tornado which touched down, and the hail which fell in the El Dorado County area, snow fell into the lower elevations of the foothills. Snow at elevations as low as 1,500 feet have reported throughout the rural Mother Lode section of California today.

As of late this afternoon, the snow has tapered off, and the rain has returned, and the residents in California have been glad to see both the snow and the rain, despite seeing little else other than rain for the last five days.

The four year drought which has plagued California will not be put to rest by what we’ve gotten in the past two weeks, but it is a very welcome sight. Along with the rain across the state, there has been significant snowfall in the higher elevations across the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Snow pack reports from the California Department of Water Resources show the current snow pack ranging from a 114 percent of average for this date (12/24/2015) in the northern sierra to 119 percent in the central sierra, to only 89 percent in the southern sierra range. All percentages given as the “average for this date.”
