The unveiled photos show Obama, dressed in a white suit and draped in a lei, posing for the camera while hugging his date Megan Hughes, a student at the Hawaii School for Girls at La Pietra.
In his teen years, Obama attended Punahou School in Hawaii, where he befriended fellow basketball player Greg Orme, pictured in the photos on the far left. The two couples are drinking champagne before they head out to the prom dance, TIME writes.
“It was a really fun, happy time. We were all cracking up, and everyone was smiling,” Allman told TIME. “It was pretty typical from there out as far as what happens at prom: the dinner and the dancing and the photos.”
In Allman’s yearbook, Obama wrote, “It has been so nice getting to know you. You are extremely sweet and foxy…I hope we can keep in touch this summer, even though Greg is gone…”
