Reports say police are not ruling out the possibility that she accidentally shot herself while handling a gun; however, they continue to seek a possible suspect or suspects. A single shot was heard by neighbours and the girl was found in the home in which she lives.
Toronto Police Const. Caroline de Kloet told media the girl was found unresponsive and not breathing. Paramedics administered CPR and she was rushed to hospital. The shooting occurred in the Finch and Martingrove area on Jamestown Crescent in the city’s west end at about 10:30 a.m. ET.
Toronto police attended and tweeted that “Officers have requested a rush on ambulance re: 14yr old female victim of shooting on Jamestown Cr~Victim unconscious & not breathing.”
Officers are going door-to-door trying to find any witnesses but Const. Victor Kwan told CP24 News, on the scene with cameras, that so far there is not much more to report.
“At this time there is very little information to go on. The scene has been contained, but the investigation is very early so we don’t have many details. The bottom line is that we have a young person who has been shot.”
An unidentified police source subsequently told media that the emergency rush to the trauma center had been aborted. “It usually only means one thing,” the police source said. “And it’s not good.”
