England striker Wayne Rooney won his race to be fit for Wednesday's Champions League, quarter-final, second-leg at Bayern Munich despite struggling with a toe injury.
United manager David Moyes started Rooney just in front of attacking midfielder Shinji Kagawa with Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck on the wings with United looking for a rare win in Germany after the first-leg finished 1-1 at Old Trafford.
Having fielded a 4-3-3 formation for the first-leg, Moyes opted for a 4-2-3-1 system with Darren Fletcher partnering Michael Carrick in the defensive midfield.
Captain Nemanja Vidic partnered Chris Smalling at centre-back with Rio Ferdinand on the bench and there was no place for veteran Ryan Giggs in the starting side with the Welshman on the bench.
With both Bastian Schweinsteiger and Javi Martinez suspended from the first leg, Bayern coach Pep Guardiola opted to name Toni Kroos as a defensive midfielder in a 4-1-4-1 formation.
Captain Philipp Lahm dropped to right-back having played in midfield at Old Trafford while Germany's Thomas Mueller and Mario Goetze pair up in the attacking midfield flanked by wingers Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery.
