Emma Czornobaj, 25, was convicted on Friday of two counts of two counts of criminal negligence causing death and two counts of dangerous driving causing death, CBC reports.
The incident occurred on June 27, 2010. The Montreal Gazette reports that Czornobaj stopped her car on highway 30 to help a group of ducklings get to the side of the road. Seconds after she parked her car, André Roy, 50, with his 16-year-old daughter Jessie crashed into it. The two were riding a Harley-Davidson vehicle.
Czornobaj will face a sentencing hearing in August. She previously said she would plead guilty to the charges against her in April though refused to serve jail time. Her lawyer is now arguing for no time in jail since there was no criminal intent.
Czornobaj has said she is an animal lover and didn’t see the ducklings’ mother anywhere. She planned on taking them to safety.
She appeared to be shocked when the jury in her trial read the verdict. The trial lasted about three weeks.
